The Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge Society is a 50 acre facility located at 7877 Skimikin Road in the Turtle Valley near Chase, BC. We are dedicated to rehabilitating and caring for unwanted, surrendered, abused and neglected donkeys. When donkeys are abused they require years of special care, costly vet and farrier work and years of love and devotion to heal the scars made by man. We are blessed to be able to facilitate this healing with love and care.

OOOPS! UPDATE ON THREE LITTLE PIGGIES
Pig number 3 who was missing overnight on Saturday was right beside his siblings on the outside of the fence on Sunday morning. Even though he badly wanted back in with his sisters, it still took an hour to get him into the pen. Not to be outdone by a pig, three of the special needs donkeys made a break for it while I was taking them from the pasture into the paddock. I had just finished lecturing Rob about letting volunteers (me) do the things I could do while he did the things that only he could do. It seemed a simple task. Get the 5 donkeys to walk across the grass in the pasture and through a gate into the paddock. They had done it so many times before - this was a piece of cake. They all lined up and headed for the gate. I was pretty proud of myself. Then disaster struck. There were TWO gates open. One leading to the paddock and one leading to the garden. You guessed it - Sara and Jose headed into the paddock and Lady Bug, Happy and Hoss trotted into Shirley's garden. I managed to get Hoss turned around and into the paddock but Lady Bug and Happy were off on an adventure. I can still hear Rob laughing his head off as he raced through the pasture on the quad. I hurried behind the two escapees and finally, with Rob and Shirley's help, the wanderers were returned to the paddock. Not funny! A few minutes later, Happy peeked around the corner of the barn to where Shirley and I were leaning on the fence (with me still trying to catch my breath) and came over to me looking a little sheepish. I gave him a head rub and forgave him for helping me make a donkey of myself. Little Lesson - there is more than one gate at the refuge so check them ahead of time. Big Lesson - when you make a big deal about being able to do something and you mess it up, somebody is probably going to get a big laugh out of it provided you don't get hurt. Except maybe your ego. And how was your Sunday morning?
