THEN AND NOW - OUR SOCRATES

Socrates at six months of ag
I have never seen a baby donkey except in pictures, and although it would be heartbreaking to think that a little one would need to come here, I sure would enjoy watching him grow up in a loving, caring environment the Refuge would offer.
That said, we received a baby picture of Socrates who is a mature, stately donkey now.  I thought that it would be great to share a then and now with everyone.  I am amazed at the change in color.
What A Handsome Boy!
Socrates is such a handsome gentleman.  He arrived with his long time companion, Annie and they have been an absolute pleasure.  Socrates has cushings disease, a disease that I thought was only found in humans.  Every day he receives medication and will do so for the remainder of his life.  At first we were able to hide it inside a little piece of bread but he soon caught on to our trick and now we have to catch him and squirt it directly into his mouth.  It is a tiny amount of liquid and it doesn't have a bad taste (don't ask) but he still makes it quite the routine.  Anyway that tiny amount of medicine keeps him alive and well so it is worth the romp every morning to administer it.  I think it is a bit of a game with him.
For more information about Socrates and our other resident donkeys, our website is www.turtlevalleydonkeyrefuge.com .  We gladly accept donations towards their care.

For those who want to take their commitment to our donkeys a step farther, ask about out our new program, the Long Ears Virtual Fostering Program.  Very interesting, brand new concept.
