On Sunday, one of our volunteers, Tom Harris spent the afternoon in the new paddocks at the Refuge. Now that the donkeys have mowed down the grass that covered the new paddocks, he is able to use his metal detector to look for old nails and other pieces of metal from years gone by that the donkeys may dig up as they happily run around and play.
The metal detector gives off a whining sound when it detects metal and this sound attracted Maximo, our original standard donkey.
As you can see he got right into the middle of things and was a great help as Tom worked his way back and forth across the mini, and then the standard herd paddocks. After inspecting the area, Max got lots of hugs and scritches from Tom. What a lovely donkey he is!
Tom's "bounty" was a few very old rusted nails, most of which were several inches below surface, a bottle cap and a few pull tabs.
Next week Tom will be back to scan the mammoth herd paddock.
