PANCAKE DAY AT THE REFUGE A HUGE SUCCESS

Happy Members
What an amazing day! A small scale pancake breakfast originally designed solely to thank people for supporting the Refuge by purchasing Memberships morphed into an opportunity to honor members, volunteers, board members, corporate sponsors and our community.
With minimal advertising, using only the community calendar in a few local papers, a blurb in our newsletter, an e-mailout, and word of mouth we hoped to encourage our supporters to attend.
The Sunday we chose was not ideal as it was Fall Fair weekend in Salmon Arm and Sorrento's 100th Anniversary Festival on the Saturday. Nevertheless, we hoped for 50 attendees and planned for 200.
We were blessed. There were indeed only about 50 visitors but everyone of them came prepared to not only enjoy breakfast in a pristine setting, but to give generously for the care of our donkeys.
Firing Up The Grill
Our Pancake Breakfast wasn't fancy-schmancy. We ate outdoors under cover at folding tables on folding chairs - all of which were donated. Our fancy table cloths were dollar store finds. Our plates and utensils were disposable. Coffee was donated by Tim Hortons and juice by McDonalds. The sausages were donated by local businesses and a frequent supporter picked up the rental cost of the grill. Another supporter covered the remaining costs for the event. And the whole event was staffed by volunteers.
I am so proud to say that 100% of the days receipts went to the Donkeys. So proud that I will say it twice - 100% TO THE DONKEYS!!!What incredibly wonderful people I volunteer with! And what kind, supportive people we have in our "community". What an amazing day!
